Chronicle Herald's Review of New Works Show
The following is an excerpt from a March 24 review of 'New Works' by Elissa Barnard, of the Chronicle Herald:
Judy Arsenault, also exhibiting at Secord Gallery, takes a viewer back into winter with her contemplative, texturally exciting, encaustic paintings of birch trees as carved vertical forms in a snowy wood.
Arsenault carves into a wax that is slightly pitted and very alive; she also spatters on delicate spots of colour and snowflakes and vague forms of birds. Two of her works include wood panels of photo transfers of ghostly birds, set amidst the panels of white snowy wax.
Like Adams, she also uses text and her subject is nature. She has an obvious love for materials and they connect well to her subject matter.
As she says, “the various stages of encaustic work mimic the great processes of the development of our natural world.”
Arsenault, inspired by the view from her Maitland studio, also exhibits abstracted, acrylic landscape paintings in vivid colour like the eye-popping Study for Autumn Tide in gold, orange and purple.
Summertime Garden, of encaustic on birch, combines the punchy colour of the acrylics with the blurred film of wax.

I have always loved birds. I feed them in my yard and they never fail to reward me with a flash of colour and feather, and a snippet of bird song.
‘Birdland’ was first conceived of last summer, as I sat and watched the birds at my feeders. I began thinking of making paintings that featured birds and where birds live.
‘Birdland’ is dedicated to the memory of my mother Alice Arsenault, who lovingly depicted these elusive beings in her own artwork, and who was herself tiny and delicate, yet possessed of surprising strength.
As I worked on the paintings, I began to incorporate bits and pieces in a type of layering process that was not unlike the building of a nest. Embedded in the encaustic are memories and reflections on life, both for birds and for people, because in many ways we are simply not that different.

100 Kilometre Art Challenge
Support Local Artists
We’re all familiar with the slogan ‘Buy Local’ as it relates to food, but we can also apply this philosophy to other areas. What about buying local art, for example?
Buy supporting local artists, we nurture creativity where we live.
Yes, great art can come from our own home towns, and is in fact already being produced here. Nova Scotia has very many extremely talented and hardworking artists. Here are some ways to participate in the 100 Kilometre Art Challenge:
*Purchase local artwork as a gift to honour an employee, or a retiree.
*When decorating your home or your office, look for original art.
*Approach a local artist to display their artwork in your place of business.
*Commission a local artist to create a painting of your business or home,
or to paint a portrait of a family member or a special pet.
*Sponsor an art exhibit.
*Support art education by offering an art bursary at a local high school.
*Host an art party for friends or staff with a local artist.
*Attend the art exhibits that are offered locally, even if you can’t afford to buy.
*Write comments in the artist's guestbook. Artists appreciate feedback from their audience.
These are just a few of the ways you can appreciate and support the creativity that is all around us locally.
